When I discovered this visual novel in 2008, I knew immediately that the series that birthed it was unique. It was this visual novel that introduced me to the series proper, so I decided that the story of Kaede and Sara would be my first patch. It has been my honor to serve the community with these releases. This particular visual novel holds significance for me, and after another year of work I am glad to finally bring it full circle after this long.

Version 2.1 contains script corrections. If you already have version 2, download one of the MSD only packages above instead.
There is a glitch with the text engine that causes lines containing a heart graphic to clear prematurely if the Auto switch is enabled. The only known workaround is to exclude them entirely. If you want to use Auto and avoid this glitch, choose the No Hearts script type when prompted. You can switch between the Normal and No Hearts versions at any time by running the patcher again; it will not affect your save files.
Be sure to check out the message window mod if you want a smaller text box or no box at all.
Instructions
Get the game first if you don’t already have it: Kissing the petal 4 Photograph of dear. Windows XP users will need to install East Asian language support as well. No further assistance will be provided for these steps. The translated game can also run under Linux using Wine after applying the fix posted here. If you install this patch under Linux, please post a report with your versions of Linux and Wine.
This patcher contains the translated script and graphics. It will work on both the disc and digital versions of both versions of the game. This patcher will overwrite program files directly, so make backups of HANABIRA4.exe, MSD, and MGD if you want to keep the original Japanese files.
It is recommended that you install the game with its own Setup first if possible. If you have administrative rights, the patcher will attempt to autodetect the game’s location in this order:
- Check for HANABIRA4.exe in the directory it was launched in. If the game is found here, it will perform one-click patching and not prompt for any information.
- Check the registry for information left by the game’s own installer. If the path in the registry is valid, you will be asked to move the files from the original Japanese path to an English path (see below).
- If registry information was not found, check C:\Program Files\ふぐり屋\その花びらにくちづけを 愛しさのフォトグラフ and C:\Program Files\‚Ó‚®‚艮\‚»‚̉Ԃтç‚É‚‚¿‚¯‚ð@ˆ¤‚µ‚³‚̃tƒHƒgƒOƒ‰ƒt (the default path if the game was installed in an English locale). If HANABIRA4.exe is found in either of these places, you will be asked to move the files.
If the game is not found in any of these locations, the patcher will prompt you to point to the location of HANABIRA4.exe.
AppLocale Workaround
Patches to the EXE included in the patcher allow internal message boxes and the window caption to be displayed in English. As a side effect, you do not need to run the patched game with AppLocale or change your system locale. However, the game files must be in a directory without Japanese characters. If your system locale is non-Japanese, the patcher can move the files automatically (by default into C:\Program Files\Fuguriya\A Kiss For The Petals – Beloved Photograph). This is recommended only if you installed the game normally. You should also move them if the files are located in a path with Japanese characters, but it is not recommended or necessary otherwise. If the game was not installed normally and is in a path with Japanese characters, you should not move them into the default location. Because this workaround is not necessary in a Japanese locale, the option will not be available in that case. This is strictly for convenience and has no effect on the patch itself.
Shortcuts
After patching is finished, the patcher will then look for shortcuts in the Start Menu, Desktop, and Quick Launch and replace them with shortcuts that point to the new path if one was specified. Note that new shortcuts will not be created where they did not exist before and that they will only apply for the current user. The game’s installer places shortcuts in all profiles individually, and the patcher cannot account for these. Information in the registry, if it exists, will also be updated to point to the new path so that the game’s uninstaller will still work. Note that the uninstaller will not remove the new shortcuts. The patcher will not create an uninstaller of its own.
For Users Without Administrative Privileges
All of the above features are available only if you run the patcher as an administrator. If you run the patcher in a limited user profile, it cannot autodetect installations, write to the registry, or create or delete shortcuts. The patch’s contents are otherwise identical. If you can’t or won’t run the patcher as an administrator, download the noadmin build, but only if the normal version does not work.
Playing The Game
The patched game will work with your system file (CONFIG.SAV), so your options and Extra menu data will be preserved.
As in the previous games, if you make any wrong decisions in the branches, the game will prematurely end after the 12th section and you will see the message “Halfway END”. If this is the case, the game will return to the title screen without showing the credits. If you didn’t save often enough, you will need to restart the game from the beginning and make different choices. The Skip function will prove useful in this task.
Notes
If possible, please buy the original game if you did not already. At writing, the retail price on English DLsite is ¥1,785, equivalent to approximately $22 USD/€16 EUR/£14 GBP. If you want to donate, please direct it to the developers instead by buying their products. I know a lot of people won’t even if I ask, but it’s worth a try to increase sales along with exposure.
I encourage all translators with an interest in this series to contact me if they want to try their hand at patching. I will assist in any way I can. I’m particularly interested in the light novels and drama CDs (especially the fourth one, which I currently can’t obtain legitimately or otherwise). Just make sure you can keep up with the strenuous pace that a full translation demands. If you’ve never done a translation for a visual novel before, it can and will take much longer than you think it will.

The translation is lovely, but I keep running into a weird glitch using auto advance where lines with <3s advance to a clear dialogue box midway through the voicing, then once the voicing is done advance from the clear box to the next line in the script.
This is a glitch inherent in the game itself. It occurs in all games following this one as well. We are working on a workaround for it.

Fantastic. I really liked the first Sara/Kaede game so this should be a lot of fun. Purchased the game a while ago in anticipation of this patch.

I have a problem with the patch installer, though: it goes normally up until about 75%, then stops at:

It stays stuck there until I stop the ArcTool.exe process and then it crashes. There is no difference between the normal and noadmin patches as far as I can tell.
Also when trying to uninstall the corrupted files from the failed patching (I used a different location after the first time) I am unable to delete the game folder or the MGD file. Maybe this has something to do with the error message?
I would appreciate some help with these two problems.

Nevermind, I got it working. It seems the installer was being blocked by AVG Anti-Virus. For some reason, when I tried to install it before, AVG simply blocked it with no notification, but this morning it gave me a block/allow message so I was able to finish the installation smoothly. I was also able to delete the corrupted MGD file from before normally.
ArcTool is powered by AutoIt, a scripting language whose programs are sometimes falsely detected as viruses by some anti-virus software. I can personally assure you that it will not cause any harm on your system.
I actually had the same problem with it stopping at that point, but when I tried it another time it also came up with AVG Anti-Virus telling me that the installer is a possible virus. When I told it that it was okay, the installation finished with no problem.

hello! thanks for the translation patch! i really dont have the time to full test it right now, but i played a little and i think there is a miss-translation at the beggining, when Sara goes to Kaede’s classroom, there she wants to go home with kaede, when one of the classmates ask if she could use the hair style of lossen hair again, to which Sara answers “there were only two times that kaede did that ” or something in those lines, but Kaede only used that hair style once in school, so i think she actually says “she will never use that style again” in response to the classmate request, which seems more apropiate to the next Sara’s comment which says “more inportantely, there will be trouble if she had any more fans”
anyway I just wanted to thank for the translation and point that little thing out, thanks for taking the time doing this,
The translator discovered this last week, but I delayed the update until I can create a workaround for the glitch related to the heart graphic.
hey its me again! XD i think i found another one! this is after Sara’s “spy mission”, the very next day, when she is walking alone and kaede following her, when sara talk with some girls that walkby, one of them says “kaede-san is a lovely person, isnt she.” to which sara answers “…throught recently I’ve being acting stupid arround her…” i dont know if you made it as a follow up, but i think Sara actually says something in the lines of “even thought the other day you treat her like stupid” or something like that, i think she reffers as that particular girl as one of the girls that made fun of Kaede for being with sara in the first game, i dont completly understand most of the follows up in english, so if this is the case, i apologize.
I believe the translator used this line as a followup to the previous chapter as opposed to the previous game. By her own admission, she has not been demonstrating sound judgment as of this segment and has been doubting Kaede heavily, hence this line. The original line 「……この間は楓ちゃんを馬鹿にしたくせにぃ……」 could be translated as you said, as it would further demonstrate Sara’s clouded judgment at this point, but to my knowledge, none of the other girls showed ill will toward Kaede.
well in the first game there is some sort of ill will, they kind of say how kaede was the oposite of Sara when they were together, which ends up frustraiting Sara in the first game, therefore forcing her to change Kaede’s apearence, the thing is that after the change, everyone was shocked by kaede’s beauty, ending up in the admiration that they have now, perhaps forcing this answer in sara in the second game. or at least that’s what i felt it was. The only issues the classmates held against Kaede were that she denied being kissed and that she refused to show Sara around the school at the beginning of My Dear Prince. In neither case did they insinuate her as a fool, and in fact they dropped these complaints after some time. Sara’s self-deprecation is in reference to recent events, i.e. ones in this game, not the one before. To say that the others were mistreating Kaede would contradict her belief that the other girls should be jealous of her beauty.
what i mean is ill will during the first game, i think Sara recognice one fo the girls being part of those that said kaede was plain in the first game, when they decide to change Kaede’s aperance, just before they leave Kaede’s classroom, they said that the contrast between those two was really obious(in the first game), and Sara gets mad beacuse she sees Kaede thinking the same thing.
Obiously in this second game everyone is in love with Kaede Xd hahahaha.
Mostly i think about this reference to the first game, because is kind of a common thing in anime, when a character makes a comment about another and the referenced one always ask like “what did you say?” or “did you say something?” and also the answer most of the time is “nothing!” or “nope, i haven’t said anything”
Well, if we’re on the subject of mispellings and errors…
There is a point in the game where Kaede asks Sara to look at her flower bookmark and says “Hey now, could you look at least look ?”. It’s the day after Sara comes back with the souvenirs and the shrine maiden outfit. Just a minor typo for when you’ll feel like releasing a patch ^^
Now, to my opinion on the game. I liked it better than the second but not as much as the first or the third. The couple’s dynamic is good, but I feel that they could have made it even
better. For example, we could have Kaede who accepts to stand out/express herself thanks to Sara. It would also have given some kind of plot to resolve since I felt there wasn’t really any, unlike the other three. In fact, I anticipated Kaede to give up her braided hair at some point to show that she had changed and accepted that she’s awesome <3
I think the problem comes from the fact that the couple is already settled and loving. I really enjoyed the game, but I feel like they could have done better and wasted some potential. However, they also improved Kaede and Sara's relationship and I liked the couple way more than in the second game (but yeah, it's still the one I least like xD). I hope I won't have the same feeling with the fifth and sixth game.

I'm pretty sure it's not an error of the game download because the game can open fine with all the weird letters at the top.
