MangaGamer 2017 Licensing Survey

MangaGamer has opened their third annual licensing survey to all readers. The final page asks for up to three license requests, and as with previous years, I highly recommend submitting A Kiss For The Petals titles. By submitting your e-mail address, you also become eligible to win one of three copies of Da Capo III R.

In the 2016 survey, the A Kiss For The Petals series as a whole ranked third in license requests, and The New Generation! was released in November of that year. With many more legacy titles remaining, I implore readers of this site to continue this momentum.

My recommendations for titles to request are, in order:

  • Maidens of Michael, my strongest recommendation and the direct sequel to Remembering How We Met as well as the largest title featuring the core St. Michael’s cast;
  • Any of Fuguriya’s releases prior to Maidens of Michael, particularly the original A Kiss For The Petals, from which I believe later titles will naturally follow;
  • The Angel’s Longing, which features a more mature storyline and was written and illustrated by the same staff as The New Generation;
  • From the Day We First Met, the follow-up to Remembering How We Met.

MangaGamer 2016 Licensing Survey

MangaGamer Licensing Survey 2016

MangaGamer has opened their second annual licensing survey to all readers through 12 February. The final page asks for up to three license requests, and I implore readers of this site to submit A Kiss For The Petals titles. By submitting your e-mail address, you also become eligible to win one of five copies of Kindred Spirits on the Roof(As a point of interest, Oukawa Mio, who voices Shitogi Eris in A Kiss For The Petals, voices Maki Seina in Kindred Spirits on the Roof.)

My recommendations for titles to request are, in order:

  • Maidens of Michael, my strongest recommendation and the direct sequel to Remembering How We Met as well as the largest title featuring the core St. Michael’s cast;
  • Any of Fuguriya’s releases prior to Maidens of Michael, particularly the original A Kiss For The Petals, from which I believe later titles will naturally follow;
  • The New Generation, the first full-length release from St. Michael Girls’ School;
  • The Angel’s Longing, which features a more mature storyline.

Due to the difficulty and time required to acquire licenses for any visual novel, I do not recommend requesting products that follow any of the above titles until those are licensed and released first, which include Lovers of the Atelier, Snow White’s Knight, My Sworn Love For You, The Angels’ Spring Romance, The Angels’ Promise, and Revolution.

The Day-to-Day of Yuri

Kimishima Aya and Kimishima Ai

Throughout June 2015 in the weeks leading to the release of A Kiss For The Petals – The New Generation!, series producer Mi Kara Deta Saba wrote a three-article series for Getchu titled “The Day-to-Day of Yuri” (百合あるある Yuri Aru Aru), a discussion of the fundamentals of the A Kiss For The Petals series that distinguishes it from other works in the genre, as well as the technical and thematic implications that arise as a result. Ralen has translated these articles for MangaGamer to promote A Kiss For The Petals – Remembering How We Met, which was published throughout eight articles. I consider them essential reading for fans of yuri, as they discuss how even a small number of self-imposed restrictions on content and storytelling can have a profound impact on a project.

The original articles contain a number of images related to The New Generation, both from the visual novel itself and exclusive to the Getchu articles. The former were not republished on MangaGamer, as the articles were repurposed for Remembering How We Met.

The season is Fall… as the uniforms transition from Summer to Winter garments, Risa suddenly has a pang of nostalgia. It was this very uniform she was wearing on her first day at St. Michael’s… The day she met her future girlfriend Miya.

Now the two of them share a passionate life as a couple living in Risa’s apartment, but there was a time in their relationship when the very sight of one another would be enough to set off an endless bout of arguing. From Risa’s point of view, it all started with her just trying to get Miya to come to class…
And even now with the two of them going out, the chronically truant girl has failed to mend her ways.

Remembering those days elicits a faint laugh from Risa. Sitting alongside her, Miya reacts to Risa’s sudden outburst with a puzzled expression.

“I was just thinking back… About when we first met.”

It was a beautiful spring day, with sakura petals dancing in the air.
The day of her unforgettable first encounter with Miya…

MangaGamer Blog: An Introduction to A Kiss for the Petals

MangaGamer has introduced the translator for A Kiss For The Petals – Remembering How We Met as Ralen, the translator for many releases from Petals’ Garden. His first post for the staff blog recounts his personal history with the series and includes a brief overview.

I’m very excited to be able to talk about A Kiss For The Petals – Remembering How We Met.  The English localization of this visual novel is a very big milestone, in more ways than one.  Not only is it the first official English release in the A Kiss For The Petals series (known in Japan as Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo, or SonoHana for short), but it is the culmination of several years of effort to bring this series to the west, and my personal debut as a professional translator.
